COURSE INFORMATION

Course Description

Introduces the Windows Operating System for microcomputers and the use of Internet, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.

Prerequisite: none

Textbook

Microsoft Office 2000: Introductory Concepts and Techniques, Shelly, Cashman, and Vermaat. Course Technology.

Supplies

Four 3.5 inch HD diskettes.

Methods of instruction

This is a mostly hands-on course. In general, there will be a lecture to introduce the material. Then you will spend much of your time working on projects on the computer. As you complete each assignment, compare your printout to the instructor's printout. If it looks correct, then submit it to the instructor for grading. Wait while the instructor checks your work so he can discuss any mistakes with you. If there is a mistake, you will have to correct it and resubmit your work for grading again.

Monday: Intro to course, Windows OS, Office 2000, IE, NotePad, HTML web page design

Tuesday: MS Word 2000 Project 1; read and do WD 1.1 - WD 1.58. Add your initials to the very end of the document before printing. Do In The Lab 3 on page WD 1.62. Add your initials to the very end of the document before printing.

Wednesday: MS Word 2000 Project 2; read and do WD 2.1 - WD 2.53. Do not e-mail a copy of the research paper. Use your last name instead of Williams in the header of the paper. Do In The Lab 1 on page WD 2.57. Use your last name instead of Thornton in the header of the paper.

Thursday: MS Word 2000 Project 3; read and do WD 3.1 - WD 3.61. Use regular paper to simulate an envelope. Use your name in place of Paulette Rose Brandon in all documents.

Monday: MS PowerPoint Project 1; read and do PP 1.1 - PP 1.70. Replace the words Seaview College with your first and last name in the first slide. Do In The Lab 2 on page PP 1.74. Use your name in place of Lake Shore Mall on the first slide.

Tuesday: MS PowerPoint Project 2; read and do PP 2.1 - PP 2.54 (do not do the email section). Use your name in place of The Office of Financial Aid on the first slide. Read Creating a Presentation on the Web Using PowerPoint pages PPW 1.1 - PPW 1.12. Do In The Lab 3 on page PPW 1.14.

Wednesday: Create a 3 - 5 minute slide show on your hobby or some other favorite topic.

Thursday: Present your PowerPoint presentation to the class.

Tuesday: MS Excel Project 1; read and do E 1.1 - E 1.58. Type in your name a couple of rows under the chart before you print. Do In The Lab 1 on page E 1.60. Use your name in place of Marvin's.

Wednesday: MS Excel Project 2; read and do E 2.1 - E 2.64. Type in your name at the bottom of the worksheet before you print it out. Do Cases and Places 1 on page E 2.77. Make sure to type your name somewhere on the worksheet before you print it out.

Thursday: MS Excel Project 3; read and do E 3.1 - E 3.67. Type in your name at the bottom of the worksheet before you print it out. Do Cases and Places 5 on page E 3.80. Make sure to type your name somewhere on the worksheet before you print it out.

Friday: Comprehensive Final Exam
